Maine's governor vetoes data center moratorium

Governor Janet Mills vetoed a bill (L.D. 307) that would impose a statewide moratorium on new data centers until November 2027.
The bill proposed creating a 13-person council to study data center construction and make recommendations.
Mills supported the moratorium but vetoed because the bill lacked an exemption for a data center project in Jay with local support.
Other states, such as New York, are considering similar moratoriums amid rising public opposition to data centers.
State Representative Melanie Sachs expressed concern that the veto could negatively affect ratepayers, the grid, environment, and energy future.
