- Sufferers hear the Hum wherever they go, while others nearby cannot; it may be an internal otoacoustic phenomenon generated by the brain or auditory organs.
- Some sufferers have hyperacusis (exceptionally sensitive hearing) and perceive actual environmental noises; the project provides tools to distinguish between internal and external sources.
