- A case report describes transient multidomain functional improvement in an octogenarian woman with advanced Alzheimer's disease after oral administration of 5g psilocybin-containing mushrooms (Enigma strain).
- The patient, who had a 10-year history of Alzheimer's with 5 years of marked hypofunction and minimal speech, showed significant functional improvements approximately 19 hours post-administration.
- Improvements included restoration of urinary continence, improved mobility, autonomous dressing, increased emotional responsiveness, sustained social interaction, contextual memory retrieval, and spontaneous conversational engagement.
- The findings suggest that residual functional capacity may persist in late-stage neurodegeneration and can become transiently accessible under specific neuromodulatory conditions like psilocybin administration, though this does not imply disease reversal.
