- Study investigates the effects of Sanopal® (5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural and α-ketoglutaric acid) on hemoglobin-oxygen affinity and oxygen saturation (SpO₂) at altitude.
- Nineteen healthy young sports students participated in a single-blinded, placebo-controlled crossover study at low (590 m) and moderate altitude (2900 m).
- Sanopal® did not increase hemoglobin-oxygen affinity or SpO₂ under resting conditions in normoxia or acute hypoxia.
- At altitude post-exercise, Sanopal® slightly increased Hb-O₂ affinity by ~2%, compared to a ~5% decrease in the placebo group (interaction effect: p = 0.030).
- No significant differences in SpO₂ or heart rate were observed between Sanopal® and placebo groups.
- The modest increase in Hb-O₂ affinity post-exercise may have limited the exercise-induced decrease but was too small to significantly raise SpO₂ at this altitude.
