- Smoking exposure is a risk factor for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).
- The study analyzed data from 1763 patients in the REHAP registry (1293 PAH, 450 CTEPH).
- 43.7% of patients were ever-smokers (44% PAH, 42.7% CTEPH).
- Ever-smokers with PAH were diagnosed at an older age and had worse clinical outcomes, especially males.
- No significant survival difference was found between ever-smokers and never-smokers with CTEPH.
- Smoking is linked to delayed diagnosis and poorer survival in PAH but not CTEPH.
- Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind smoking's impact on PAH.
