  • Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) may precede aplastic anemia (AA) diagnosis by several years.
  • AA is a bone marrow failure syndrome caused by immune destruction of hematopoietic stem cells.
  • CH involves the expansion of progenitor hematopoietic stem cells with leukemogenic driver mutations.
  • A UK Biobank study (2006-2022) found individuals with CH had a higher risk of AA (HR: 2.72).
  • Specific mutations (SRSF2, TET2, ASXL1, DNMT3A) showed stronger associations with AA risk.
  • SRSF2 mutations had the highest risk (HR: 19.35) for developing AA.
  • Further research is needed to understand the shared pathogenic mechanisms between CH and AA.
