Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University developed a camera lens that can focus on objects at multiple distances simultaneously.
The new 'computational lens' combines optics and algorithms to adjust focus differently for every part of a scene.
The system uses two autofocus methods: Contrast-Detection Autofocus (CDAF) and Phase-Detection Autofocus (PDAF).
This technology could revolutionize photography, microscopy, autonomous vehicles, and augmented/virtual reality.
The research was presented at the 2025 International Conference on Computer Vision and received a Best Paper Honorable Mention.
