- Postoperative pneumonia (POP) is a serious complication after thoracic surgery, increasing morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs.
- This study evaluates the efficacy of perioperative oral care (POC) in reducing POP incidence.
- A systematic review and meta-analysis included 25 studies (9 RCTs, 16 observational) with 52,227 patients.
- POP incidence was 11.6% in the POC group vs. 12.6% in the control group.
- Meta-analysis showed POC significantly reduces POP risk (RR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.44-0.67; p < 0.001).
- POC should be integrated into perioperative protocols to improve clinical outcomes.
