- The study evaluated circulating tumor high-risk HPV DNA (ctHPVDNA) as a primary diagnostic test for HPV status in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV(+)OPSCC) patients.
- A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 236 OPSCC patients showed ctHPVDNA had 100% specificity and positive predictive value (PPV), but only 85% sensitivity and 17% negative predictive value (NPV).
- All patients with positive ctHPVDNA results also had positive tissue-based HPV testing, while negative ctHPVDNA results required further HPV testing on pathology specimens due to false negatives.
- The findings suggest ctHPVDNA can reliably confirm HPV status when positive, potentially reducing the need for additional tissue testing in cases with high clinical suspicion.
