- High intrapancreatic fat deposition (IPFD), or fatty pancreas disease (FPD), is a major driver in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
- Meta-analysis of 12 studies (6,369 individuals) shows a pooled FPD prevalence of 54.28% in T2DM patients.
- FPD prevalence is lower in Asian studies (42.85%) compared to European studies (69.19%).
- Higher FPD prevalence observed in smaller studies (<100 individuals: 67.55%) and clinic/hospital-based settings (57.90%).
- No significant differences in FPD prevalence based on IPFD measurement method or study year.
- Approximately half of T2DM patients have FPD, indicating a significant metabolic burden.
- Multidisciplinary efforts needed to define IPFD's role in T2DM and develop prevention/monitoring strategies.
