- Methylprednisolone (mPSL) pulse therapy for lupus can cause osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), linked to neutrophil extracellular trap (NET)-mediated microcirculation issues.
- In lupus mice, mPSL pulse increases serum PCYOX1, which produces NET inducers, but without hyperlipidemia, ONFH does not develop.
- Hyperlipidemic ApoE mutant lupus mice treated with mPSL developed ONFH, showing higher PCYOX1 levels, increased NET-forming neutrophils, and NET accumulation in femoral head vessels.
