Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a chronic valvular disorder caused by acute rheumatic fever, primarily affecting the mitral valve.
The study uses the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 (GBD 2021) to analyze RHD trends from 1990 to 2021 across 204 countries and territories.
Key metrics analyzed include incidence, prevalence, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and mortality, with variations by sex, age, and sociodemographic index.
Two-sample Mendelian randomization identified high systolic blood pressure and high body mass index as causal risk factors for RHD.
Findings show a slight increase in age-standardized prevalence and incidence rates but a decline in mortality and DALY rates.
Projections suggest a continued rise in RHD incidence from 2022 to 2050, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.
