Millions Are Turning to a Cheaper, Electricity-Free Cooling Solution

Scientists at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology developed Nescod, a cooling system that reduces temperature without using electricity.
Nescod uses ammonium nitrate, which dissolves in water endothermically, absorbing heat and lowering temperature by up to 25°C to 3.6°C in 20 minutes.
The system regenerates itself using solar energy to evaporate water and recrystallize the salt for reuse, minimizing water loss and eliminating external power needs.
Nescod addresses global energy challenges by reducing reliance on electricity for cooling, which accounts for about 10% of energy consumption, especially in hot regions.
Potential applications extend beyond indoor cooling to food preservation, medicine storage, and transportation of temperature-sensitive goods in areas with unreliable power.
