- A 4-year longitudinal study of 1661 community-dwelling adults aged 70-84 without baseline sarcopenia found that deterioration in nutritional status (assessed via Mini Nutritional Assessment) significantly increased the risk of developing sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia.
- Compared to participants with unchanged nutritional status, those whose status deteriorated had a 77% higher risk of sarcopenia (HR 1.77) and a 97% higher risk of severe sarcopenia (HR 1.97). The association remained strong even among those with normal baseline nutrition.
- The study highlights that baseline nutritional risk and longitudinal decline in nutrition are robust predictors of sarcopenia, suggesting clinical strategies to monitor and improve nutritional status could be essential for preventing sarcopenia in older adults.
