- Researchers identified a distinct population of macrophages residing within blood vessels in zebrafish embryos, named blood vessel-resident macrophages (bMμs), which are conserved in mice.
- These bMμs patrol the bloodstream, clear foreign particles and unfit cells, and act as first responders to endothelial damage.
- The bMμs emerge through an atypical endothelial-to-macrophage transition from axial vessels, independent of Runx1 and Csf1r, revealing a dedicated vascular immune surveillance mechanism.
