- Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among adolescent and young adult females in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are a growing concern.
- In 2021, NCDs accounted for 21.13% of total deaths in females aged 10-24 years in SSA, with 52,083.13 deaths reported.
- The top five leading causes of NCD deaths were neoplasms, cardiovascular diseases, digestive diseases, neurological disorders, and diabetes and kidney diseases.
- An inverse correlation was found between NCD death rates and socioeconomic and health system indicators (P < .001).
- The NCD burden has been increasing since 2000 and is projected to continue rising, with neoplasms showing the highest increasing trend.
- Targeted interventions and strengthened health systems are recommended to address the NCD burden in adolescent girls in SSA.
