- Preoperative oral iron supplementation in children with acyanotic congenital heart disease significantly reduces allogeneic blood transfusion needs after cardiac surgery.
- The intervention group received iron (3 mg/kg), folic acid, and cyanocobalamin for at least 7 days, showing a hemoglobin increase of 1.3 gm/dl before surgery.
- Blood transfusion amounts were lower in the intervention group (median 5 ml/kg vs. 10 ml/kg) with a significant reduction in total cumulative transfusion (60 ml vs. 100 ml).
- Secondary outcomes, including duration of mechanical ventilation, ICU stay, and hospital stay, were also significantly reduced in the intervention arm.
