- The study analyzed data from the CHAMPS network across eight sites in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
- Among 4,378 deaths of children aged 0-59 months, 16.7% occurred within 180 days of a prior hospitalization.
- Over half (55.7%) of these deaths post-hospitalization occurred outside healthcare facilities.
- Common causes of death among those with prior hospitalizations were lower respiratory tract infections (41.2%), sepsis (39.8%), and undernutrition (27.3%).
- Children aged 1-11 months and those with severe undernutrition (weight-for-age Z-score < -3) were disproportionately represented among deaths following hospitalization.
