- The study examined the impact of cirrhosis with extrahepatic organ failures (EHOFs) in four European countries (Germany, France, Italy, Denmark).
- Over a 4-year period (2017-2020), 20.6% of 1.6 million cirrhosis admissions included at least one EHOF, with kidneys (52.9%) and respiration (41.2%) most commonly affected.
- While cirrhosis admissions decreased from 414,093 to 375,112 annually, the proportion with EHOF rose from 19.9% to 21.5%.
- In-hospital mortality for cirrhosis patients with EHOF was 29.2%, significantly higher than the 7.9% mortality for those without EHOF.
- EHOF accounted for 44.9% of estimated total healthcare claims for all cirrhosis hospital admissions, highlighting a substantial economic strain on healthcare systems.
