- The study examines the remnant cholesterol inflammatory index (RCII) as a predictor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in early cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome stages.
- Analysis involved 5,961 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), aged ≥45 years, without baseline CVD, followed from 2015 to 2020.
- A 1-unit increase in log-RCII was associated with a higher CVD risk (HR 1.070, 95% CI 1.016-1.127).
- Participants in the highest RCII quartile had a 23.9% increased CVD risk compared to the lowest quartile.
- The association between RCII and CVD was linear, with systolic blood pressure mediating 5.0% of this relationship.
- Findings suggest RCII could serve as a simple research marker to identify higher CVD risk individuals in early CKM stages, though further validation is needed for clinical use.
