- A dual-functional hydrogel (C1.5P4/BMP-2) was developed for non-invasive concurrent treatment of periodontitis and myocardial infarction (MI).
- The hydrogel features an interconnected microporous architecture enabling high-efficiency BMP-2 protein encapsulation and sustained release.
- It provides potent antibacterial properties, selectively inhibiting Gram-negative anaerobic pathogens while enriching Gram-positive commensals.
- In murine models, the hydrogel attenuated alveolar bone loss (2-fold greater bone regeneration) and improved post-MI cardiac function (75.6% higher ejection fraction).
- The hydrogel modulates the oral-cardiac inflammatory axis by downregulating B2 cell/TNF-α signaling, mitigating systemic inflammation associated with MI.
- This study presents a novel non-invasive protein-stabilizing hydrogel addressing periodontitis-MI comorbidity through sustained osteogenic factor delivery and microbiome-immune modulation.
