Bankruptcies increase 11.9 percent

Bankruptcy filings increased by 11.9% year-over-year ending March 31, 2026, reaching 591,850 cases.
Business filings rose by 11.4% to 25,960, while non-business filings increased by 11.9% to 565,890.
Filings have risen each quarter since a low in June 2022 but remain below historical highs, which peaked at nearly 1.6 million in 2010.
Chapter 7 filings were the most common type in 2026, followed by Chapter 13, with totals for each bankruptcy chapter provided for recent years.
