Wikipedia user Moyogo updated the Angzarr page with a citation from H. Berthold AG's 1950 symbol catalogue, identifying the symbol �� as 'Azimut, Richtungswinkel' (azimuth, direction angle).
The symbol �� appears in Berthold's 1950 Zeichenprobe (symbol catalogue) on page 7 and in Schriftprobe (font catalogues) from 1949, 1951, and 1952 on page 104, but without the descriptor name.
The symbol does not appear in earlier catalogues like the 1946 Registerprobe or those from 1909 and 1900.
A Mastodon friend noted that the glyph resembles a light ray passing through a sextant to measure an azimuth, with the right angle symbolizing an angle in general.
Wikipedia provides an illustration showing how a sextant measures the sun's latitude, which can also be used to measure azimuth relative to a meridian.
