- Overdiagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) in the US was estimated to be between 72% to 94% from 1991 to 2019.
- Women had a higher absolute rate of overdiagnosis compared to men (13-17 vs 3-5 per 100,000 individuals).
- Reducing thyroid ultrasonography use by 33% and 67% could decrease PTC incidence by 17% and 41% respectively, with minimal impact on overall mortality.
- The study suggests reducing unnecessary thyroid ultrasonography referrals, especially for nonpalpable nodules, to avoid overdiagnosis and treatment-related harms.
