  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major and costly comorbidity in type 2 diabetes management.
  • The study used latent class analysis (LCA) to classify individuals with type 2 diabetes and incident CKD based on demographic and clinical profiles.
  • Four distinct classes were identified based on baseline profiles: young onset with moderate comorbidities and multiple medications, old-age onset with moderate comorbidities and multiple medications, middle-aged onset with few comorbidities and few medications, and middle-aged onset with moderate comorbidities and multiple medications.
  • Young-onset type 2 diabetes incurred the highest cost during the year of CKD onset, while middle-aged onset with fewer comorbidities also had increased healthcare costs.
  • The study highlights the importance of early intervention for individuals with high healthcare costs due to CKD.
