- The Mediterranean diet (MD) and low-fat diet (LFD) are compared for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention.
- A systematic review of 11 RCTs with 5942 participants was conducted.
- MD significantly reduced procoagulant and prothrombotic microvesicles compared to LFD.
- MD showed greater reductions in total cholesterol, cholesterol-HDL ratios, insulin levels, blood glucose, leukocyte count, and BMI.
- MD is more effective than LFD in improving CV risk factors and outcomes.
- The findings support recommending MD over LFD for secondary CVD prevention.
- Further research is needed on long-term adherence and implementation in diverse populations.
