  • The study examined vaginal microbiota transplantation (VMT) without antibiotic pretreatment for treating vaginal dysbiosis in a double-blind, randomized controlled trial.
  • No significant difference in dysbiosis resolution was found between the VMT group (37 participants) and placebo group (12 participants), with a hazard ratio of 0.65 (95% CI 0.20–2.16, p=0.49).
  • In an extension study, antiseptic pretreatment before VMT led to microbiome conversion in 50% (5 out of 10) of refractory participants.
  • Adverse events occurred in 42% of both VMT and placebo participants, with none being serious or causing withdrawal, and no treatment-related serious incidents.
  • The findings suggest VMT without antibiotics did not significantly improve outcomes, but antiseptic pretreatment may enhance efficacy, warranting further research on optimized dosing and donor engraftment as outcomes.
