  • The study evaluated the impact of radiation therapy (RT) for breast cancer on coronary artery disease (CAD) profile using cardiac CT.
  • A retrospective case-control study included 154 female patients (77 RT group, 77 control group), matched for age, BMI, and cardiovascular risk factors.
  • No significant differences were found between RT and control groups in coronary artery calcium (CAC) score (201.1 vs 75.4 AU), CAD-RADS score, obstructive disease rate (29% vs 23%), or high-risk plaque phenotype rate (9% vs 17%).
  • No evidence of difference was observed between left and right RT in CAC scores (309 vs 120 AU), coronary stenosis severity, or high-risk plaque rates.
  • Valvular fibrosis and calcifications were low in prevalence and showed no significant differences between groups (5% vs 3% and 16% vs 9%, respectively).
  • Fibrous adherence of coronary arteries to chambers was 1.4-fold higher in the RT group (29% vs 13%), but this difference was not statistically significant.
  • Conclusion: RT for breast cancer was not associated with more severe coronary stenosis, high-risk plaque phenotypes, or valvular fibrosis in this cohort.
