- First evidence of microplastic pollution found in human trabecular meshwork (TM).
- Study links microplastic (MP) accumulation in TM to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
- Predominant polymers detected: polyamide 66 (PA66), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polypropylene (PP).
- 76.9% of detected MP particles were under 50 μm, relevant to TM pore size.
- Strong correlation found between total MP burden and maximum recorded IOP (ρ = 0.735, P < 0.001) and preoperative IOP (ρ = 0.797, P < 0.001).
- Suggests a new etiological pathway for glaucoma related to environmental MP exposure.
