- Two translocation mechanisms, mitotic somal translocation (MST) and interphasic somal translocation (IST), drive neural stem cell dissemination in the human fetal cortex.
- IST is microtubule-dependent and accounts for 85% of basal radial glial (bRG) cell movement, covering 0.67 mm per month of gestation.
- IST is driven by the dynein motor and its activator LIS1, recruited by the LINC complex, while MST is controlled by the mitotic cell-rounding pathway.
- Both IST and MST mechanisms are also observed in bRG-related glioblastoma cells.
- The study uses live imaging of human fetal tissue and cortical organoids to identify these mechanisms.
