- Parental obesity is linked to an increased risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in adult offspring.
- The study included 1933 offspring from the UK Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).
- 10.4% of offspring had MASLD at age 24.
- Each 1 kg/m² increase in maternal BMI raised the odds of offspring MASLD by 10%, while paternal BMI increased it by 9%.
- Biparental overweight or obesity was associated with 3.73 times higher odds of offspring MASLD compared to parents with normal BMI.
- 67% of the association between parental obesity and offspring MASLD was mediated by cumulative excess childhood BMI.
- The study highlights the potential of life course interventions to reduce MASLD risk in future generations.
