- Prediabetes, defined by impaired fasting glucose (IFG), is an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
- The ATTICA cohort study followed 1,796 adults over 20 years, finding 40.2% CVD incidence in the IFG group vs. 30.2% in the normal fasting glucose (NFG) group.
- All IFG participants progressed to type 2 diabetes (T2D) within 20 years, compared to only 13.5% of NFG participants.
- Earlier onset of T2D (within 10 years) doubled the subsequent risk of CVD.
- The study highlights the need for timely screening and preventive strategies for individuals with prediabetes to mitigate CVD risk.
