- The European distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) registry collected prospective data from 2019 to 2024.
- dRTA is characterized by metabolic acidosis, growth failure, nephrocalcinosis, nephrolithiasis, and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
- 214 patients were enrolled, with 22% being adults (>18 years) and 69% having a documented genetic cause.
- Low blood bicarbonate levels (<22 mmol/L) and hypercalciuria were observed in 42% and 25% of patients, respectively.
- Height standard deviation score (SDS) was positively associated with serum bicarbonate levels and early diagnosis.
- Patients aged >30 years had significantly lower eGFR, and 36% had CKD ≥ stage 2.
- Patients with SLC4A1 variants were at higher risk of CKD.
- The study highlights the importance of metabolic control and suggests increasing blood bicarbonate levels to 24 mmol/L for improved growth.
