- The AEuROMONAS study analyzed 590 Aeromonas isolates from bloodstream infections across 56 European hospitals from 2020-2024.
- Most isolates (73.1%) were from polymicrobial blood cultures, with catheter-related infections being frequent (21.7%).
- The most common species were A. caviae (30.1%), unidentified Aeromonas spp. (24.8%), A. hydrophila (20.7%), and A. veronii (19.1%).
- At the genus level, susceptibility exceeded 90% for aztreonam, ceftazidime, and cefepime.
- Resistance to fluoroquinolones was above 10%, and up to 11% for sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, with higher rates in A. caviae and A. hydrophila.
- The study highlights emerging resistance to fluoroquinolones and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, and calls for improved surveillance and diagnostic standards in Europe.
