- A team of engineers including UCL researchers set a new fiber optic data transmission speed record of 450 terabits per second over an existing 39-km commercial link in London, using five frequency bands.
- The record, presented at OFC 2026, is about 4 million times faster than typical home internet and expands bandwidth by adding O, E, and S bands to conventional C and L bands, enabling nearly 1,000 additional channels.
- This proof-of-concept demonstrates the unused capacity of installed fiber, with potential applications in connecting data centers and AI infrastructure, and could see commercial adoption in 3–5 years.
