- MVV Energie plans to build the most powerful heat pump modules ever, with two units each having a capacity of 82.5 megawatts, enough to supply around 40,000 homes via a district heating system.
- The heat pumps will draw water from the River Rhine in Germany, using 2m diameter pipes to take 10,000 litres per second, returning the water after heat extraction.
- The project is set to start next year, with full operation expected by winter 2028-29, costing €200m and featuring a multi-step filter system to protect aquatic life.
- Everllence is working on a project in Aalborg, Denmark, with a total capacity of 176MW, using four 44MW units, set to become operational in 2027 and supply nearly one-third of the town's heating demand.
- Large heat pumps are becoming more common as cities seek to decarbonize, with systems in Helsinki using air as a heat source due to shallow sea conditions, and electric boilers providing grid-balancing functions.
- The UK is developing new district heating networks, such as the Exeter Energy Network, with plans for three 4MW air-to-water heat pumps, and exploring heat from disused mines for larger heat pumps.
