- Red blood cell exchange transfusion (ET) is used as adjunctive treatment for severe babesiosis, but clinical effectiveness data are lacking.
- This multicenter cohort study of 629 severely ill adult patients with babesiosis found that ET within the first 7 days of hospitalization reduced the composite outcome of in-hospital death or 30-day readmission from 9.8% to 3.6% (adjusted odds ratio 0.22).
- The study suggests ET is beneficial for severely ill patients with babesiosis, although further research is needed to identify which patients benefit most.
