10 major tech publications lost a combined 63 million monthly organic visits from Google between 2024 and January 2026, a 58% decline.
Digital Trends saw the steepest decline, dropping 97% from 8.6M to 269K monthly visits.
Other significant declines include ZDNet (-90%), HowToGeek (-85%), The Verge (-84%), and TechRadar (-74%).
CNET, Tom's Guide, and Wired lost 47%, 50%, and 62% of their traffic, respectively.
PCMag and Mashable fared better but still lost 29% and 30% of their traffic.
The pattern extends beyond tech, with NerdWallet (finance) losing 73% and Healthline (health) losing 50% of their traffic.
The steepest declines began in mid-2025, coinciding with Google's AI Overviews expansion, increased Reddit rankings for commercial keywords, and growing use of AI assistants for product research.
Sites dependent on informational queries (e.g., HowToGeek) were hit hardest as AI Overviews provided direct answers without requiring clicks.
Reddit gained ranking positions for commercial keywords, further diverting traffic from traditional publishers.
The shift to AI assistants like ChatGPT for product research also contributed to declining search traffic.
