- This study developed a human NMJ microphysiological system to assess peripheral nervous system pathology in familial Alzheimer's disease (fAD).
- Results showed that NMJs formed with fAD motoneurons exhibited severe to moderate functional deficiencies, depending on the mutation (PSEN1 A246E vs. APP K595N/M596L).
- The findings indicate that fAD mutations can directly impair NMJ function, suggesting motor deficits in AD may occur independently of cognitive issues.
