Apple provided the FBI with the real iCloud email address hidden behind Apple’s ‘Hide My Email’ feature.
The data was turned over during an investigation into a man who allegedly sent a threatening email to Alexis Wilkins, the girlfriend of FBI director Kash Patel.
The threatening email contained violent language and was sent from an anonymized iCloud email address.
Apple's records revealed the email was associated with an Apple account in the name of Alden Ruml, who later confessed to sending the email.
Hide My Email is a feature for iCloud+ subscribers designed to keep personal email addresses private by generating unique, random email addresses.
