- The TP-Link TL-SG108 is an 8-port Gigabit Ethernet plug-and-play desktop switch based on the Realtek RTL8370N chip.
- The RTL8370N chip, found in many low-cost switches, includes an embedded 8051 microcontroller and can support web-managed features via software limitations.
- The TL-SG108 lacks a MAC address, default IP, and VLAN tagging support out of the box, but its firmware can be modified by replacing the SPI flash chip with a larger one.
- Firmware from a similar switch (GS308Ev4) can be flashed onto the TL-SG108 to enable VLAN management, though this may cause LED and reset functionality issues.
- MAC address and serial number data are stored at offset 0x1fc000 in the firmware, allowing for easy modification to avoid conflicts on the network.
- Converting an unmanaged switch to managed may not be cost-effective compared to buying a used managed switch or one compatible with OpenWrt.
- The Araknis Networks AN-110 switch also uses the RTL8370N chip but lacks VLAN features despite having a web interface; flashing custom firmware proved unsuccessful.
- TP-Link underwent a restructuring in 2024, leading to brand variations, but firmware from similar models like the Mercury SG108 Pro did not enable management on the TL-SG108.
