Art Doesn't Scale

- The author recounts overhearing a debate between a tech worker and an artist about whether AI-generated art is 'art,' highlighting the classic 'Boomer vs. Doomer' conflict.
- AI art is compared to forgeries, where the aesthetic value of a piece is tainted once its origin (e.g., AI or forgery) is revealed, undermining the criteria for judging art.
- The author argues that the value of art lies in the human effort, context, and sacrifice behind its creation, not just the final output.
- Efficiency and cost reduction are not valid reasons to replace human-made art with AI-generated content, as the choice to consume authentic, human-made art is essential.
- The author prefers the 'ache' of unfinished art from a real creator over infinite AI-generated continuations, because the waiting and uncertainty are part of the art's meaning.
- AI tools are presented as a threat to remove choice and devalue the human connection inherent in artistic creation.

- The author was initially amazed by DALL-E's outputs, feeling a sense of magic and discovery.
- Comparing old Midjourney v2 with a new model (Nano Banana Pro) shows that newer models are technically better at generating images but less capable of creating evocative, artistic work.
- Old models produced imperfect, vague, and contradictory images that sparked imagination and mystery, while new models are too precise and literal, resulting in dull, desaturated outputs.
- Specific examples (e.g., Electron Contours, Kowloon Walled City, Dream Garden) illustrate that older outputs, though less accurate, were more beautiful and compelling due to their coarse, impressionistic style.
- The new model often interprets prompts literally (e.g., 'from the British Museum' as a photograph) rather than evocatively, losing artistic nuance.
- The author concludes that new models' high precision and resolution prevent them from creating abstract, multi-interpretable art, and calls for making AI art weird again.
Adobe’s CREATOR Act: A Can Of AI-Flavored Worms
2 months ago
- Fender is trying to protect its Stratocaster design, but it is widely considered generic after decades of use.
- John Mayer’s PRS Silver Sky guitar, inspired by the Strat, led to a legal complaint from Fender, highlighting tensions over design ownership.
- Adobe backs the CREATOR Act to give artists ownership of their visual style, aiming to address AI-driven style imitation.
- The proposed law risks legal battles similar to the 'Blurred Lines' case, where general style rather than specific elements was litigated.
- Overprotection of style could stifle creativity and lead to a climate of constant lawsuits, harming the next generation of artists.
