- Imbue Catalyst is a research tool that uses evolution-inspired methods to improve AI systems, such as optimizing a small transformer language model (nanochat).
- It addresses limitations of current LLMs, including tunnel vision, hypothesis collapse, and confirmation bias, which hinder self-improvement.
- Catalyst maintains a population of 'interpretation strands' that evolve through data gathering and integration iterations, promoting diversity and robustness.
- The tool outperforms single-agent approaches and linear baselines in optimizing verifiable goals like minimizing BPB metric on a 5-minute training budget.
- Catalyst is released under AGPL-3.0 license to encourage open collaborative research on AI self-improvement.
