- The author, who experienced the pre-internet era, details the practical hardships of life without internet, such as getting lost while driving and the difficulty of finding people, while also acknowledging the internet's benefits.
- Early internet ideology, exemplified by John Perry Barlow's 'A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace' (1996), promoted radical individualism, technological determinism, and free-market absolutism, promising a utopian outcome.
- Langdon Winner's 1997 essay identified and criticized cyberlibertarianism, predicting that its principles would lead to the opposite of its promised communitarian outcomes, such as corporate dominance and social harm.
- The cyberlibertarian model relied on unpaid moderators and volunteers (e.g., Reddit, Wikipedia) while platforms profited, and it was later abandoned by corporations once they achieved dominance, leaving behind broken promises and societal issues.
- The internet's current state—including misinformation, corporate control, and social fragmentation—is a direct result of cyberlibertarian ideology, which the author argues must be replaced with an ethical code prioritizing responsibility over profit.
