- President Trump imposed 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, citing discrimination against U.S. autos, alcohol, and cheese.
- The tariffs, enacted under Section 338 of the 1930 Trade Act, exclude energy, potash, fish, and critical minerals but include USMCA-covered goods.
- The tariffs take effect in 30 days, allowing time for negotiations, but risk escalating a trade war and causing economic turmoil.
- Canadian leaders and business groups criticized the move, calling for reciprocal tariffs and urging talks during the 30-day window.
- The tariffs pose political risks for Trump ahead of midterm elections, as they may worsen inflation and economic uncertainty.
- Trump’s actions were influenced by Canada’s retaliatory tariffs and past disputes over dairy, alcohol, and auto trade.
