Why Is Europe Burning?
- A series of devastating wildfires in Spain, including the largest in recorded history, have been fueled by extreme heat, drought, and land abandonment.
- Rural exodus and afforestation with flammable species like pine and eucalyptus have increased fuel loads, making fires more intense.
- Experts argue that fire suppression spending outweighs prevention, and that involving local communities in land management and controlled burns is essential.
- Climate change exacerbates fire risk, but structural issues like land abandonment and monoculture plantations are key drivers.
- Rewilding efforts may unintentionally increase fire risk unless balanced with active landscape management.
- The author finds hope in resilience and the potential for learning from traditional practices and local capacity building.
Show HN: Firemaps Spain – Live wildfire map with wind flow for ES and PT

- Firemaps España provides real-time wildfire maps for Spain and Portugal updated every few minutes.
- The service is free and requires no registration, using NASA satellite data (VIIRS and MODIS) for heat sources in the last 24 hours, color-coded by severity.
- It includes burned area perimeters from the last 7 days (Copernicus EFFIS).
- Wind data (direction, speed, smoke trajectory) is shown next to each fire.
- A ranking of affected municipalities helps users quickly identify where fires are located.
California cannot keep rewarding utilities after catastrophic wildfires
2 months ago
- A fake wildfire victims group funded by California's for-profit electric utilities is misleading the public, while the real survivors, represented by Every Fire Survivor's Network, remain displaced and financially devastated.
- Governor Gavin Newsom is reportedly working on a last-minute utility bailout behind closed doors, repeating a pattern where the legislature protected utilities instead of survivors last year.
- The state approved a $1.1 billion rate increase and nearly $1 billion in retroactive payments to Southern California Edison, whose equipment is investigated for the Eaton Fire, while Edison's profits tripled and CEO pay soared.
- The author argues that these actions are a wealth transfer from hardworking Californians to Wall Street, not bankruptcy protection, and calls for an open legislative process without corporate favoritism.
- A coalition including the NAACP and Public Citizen urges Newsom to reject policies that shield corporate misconduct and to apply the principle 'you break it, you fix it' instead of rewarding failure.

- In Bordeaux, 7,000 people are sheltered in the largest French evacuation since WWII, while firefighters in Spain work to prevent two fires from merging.
- Europe is the fastest-warming continent, with temperatures rising over twice the global average, exacerbating wildfire risks.
- The 2026 wine vintage in Bordeaux is currently safe from smoke taint, as unripe grapes are less vulnerable.
- A wet winter followed by record-hot temperatures and drought, known as 'flash drought,' has fueled the wildfires.
- Additional evacuations in France and Spain have occurred, with thousands of firefighters injured and international aid arriving.

- Spain declared its first wildfire national emergency as two blazes merged near Madrid, with extreme heat and dry conditions fueling the fires.
- Both countries sought EU help; officials described the situation as unprecedented and a 'perfect storm' of high temperatures and strong winds.
- About 800 firefighters and water-bombing planes are battling the fires, but conditions remain highly dynamic and unfavorable.
- Climate breakdown is cited as a factor, increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events and wildfires.

- Once wildfires start in Canada's boreal forests, they often become uncontrollable due to the vast area and limited resources.
- Climate change has increased the size and intensity of wildfires, with record-breaking seasons occurring recently, such as in 2023.
- Wildfire smoke affects air quality in distant cities like Toronto and New York, making smoky summers more common in eastern regions.
- Fires have led to evacuations, closures, and dangerous incidents, such as a train crew being surrounded by flames in Ontario.
- Wildfires are causing a decline in black spruce conifers and transforming vegetation, impacting forest ecosystems.
- Boreal forests, which store massive amounts of carbon, are becoming significant sources of greenhouse gases when they burn.
- Studies show carbon emissions from wildfires have increased by 60% in two decades, with Canadian fires contributing heavily.
- Large fires can generate extreme conditions like hurricane-force winds and pyrocumulus clouds, spreading smoke globally.
- Heat waves often coincide with wildfires, as seen in the 2021 Lytton fire following record-high temperatures.
- Wildfire smoke darkens glaciers, accelerating melting and creating feedback loops that exacerbate climate change.
