Windows 11 is quietly installing OneDrive Photos
2 months ago
- Microsoft silently installed 'OneDrive Photos' on Windows 11 via updates without user consent.
- The app is based on WebView2 and runs as a separate executable from the OneDrive sync client.
- OneDrive Photos scans local photo folders even without a Microsoft account, duplicating functions of the existing Microsoft Photos app.
- Users cannot uninstall OneDrive Photos independently; removing it requires uninstalling the entire OneDrive sync client.
- The app includes AI-powered search, face grouping (with biometric data warnings), and cloud integration when signed in.
HP admits 30% of PCs reject Windows 11, and it's why Microsoft caved on support
2 months ago
- Microsoft extended Windows 10 support to October 2027, driven by continued user resistance to Windows 11.
- HP data indicates 30% of its installed base still uses Windows 10, a significant share despite the nearing deadline.
- No official Microsoft data exists; third-party trackers like StatCounter and Steam are incomplete or biased.
- HP sees Windows 11 refresh driving growth in Asia-Pacific and Europe, now on par with North America.
- HP expects future sales boosts from the remaining 30% of PCs still on Windows 10 needing upgrades.
- Microsoft's extension aims to ease transition for consumers, but no final cutoff has been confirmed.
- Windows 11 adoption may improve with Microsoft’s renewed focus on fundamentals and winning back users.

W11 Copilot tells you what's slowing down your PC, while using 1GB RAM itself
3 months ago
- Copilot is testing a new AI feature called 'PC Insights' to analyze system resource usage, storage, and performance issues.
- The optional PC Insights feature can access CPU, RAM, GPU usage, storage capacity, connected devices, network info, battery health, and antivirus status, but not file contents without permission.
- Copilot uses this data to answer questions contextually, like checking free storage for game installations, and aims to simplify tasks compared to using Task Manager or Settings.
- Microsoft claims Copilot only accesses system information with user permission and does not use personal files or system data to train AI models.
- Despite its utility, Copilot itself is resource-intensive, using up to 1GB of RAM, as it now includes a private Microsoft Edge instance as a web app.
Microsoft admits a Windows 11 bug is eating up to 500GB of storage
3 months ago
- A bug in Windows 11 can cause the CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal file to grow excessively, consuming hundreds of gigabytes of storage.
- The issue is linked to the Capability Access Manager, which logs app permissions for features like microphone, camera, and location.
- Affected users can check storage usage via Settings > Storage > Show more categories > System & Reserved to see if system files are using abnormally high space.
- Microsoft released a fix in the optional update KB5095093 (June 2026) to improve disk space usage for the problematic file, with an automatic rollout expected in July 2026.
- To safely check file size without permissions, use an elevated Command Prompt with a robocopy command to list files in the protected directory.
- If the drive is full and updates cannot install, a workaround involves renaming the oversized file in Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment, though deleting system files is not recommended.
Windows 11 will soon be able to reinstall itself and drivers without a USB drive
3 months ago
- Windows 11 introduces 'Cloud Rebuild' recovery method for reinstalling OS and drivers without a USB drive.
- Cloud Rebuild downloads Windows image and device drivers from Windows Update, ensuring a fully functional system post-reinstall.
- Unlike Reset this PC, Cloud Rebuild works even when Windows is unbootable and does not preserve apps or files.
- Currently in preview for Windows Insiders, with general availability expected in the coming months.
