  • Nirmal Purja, a renowned Nepali mountaineer and former UK Special Forces member, died in an avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak while leading an expedition of 10 others.
  • The avalanche struck around noon on Thursday, and Elite Exped confirmed Purja's death along with other expedition members who did not survive.
  • Purja made history in 2019 by climbing all 14 peaks over 8,000 meters in just over six months and later led the first team to summit K2 in winter.
  • The expedition included climbers from Nepal, the US, Pakistan, Oman, China, and another foreign climber, with victims including Nadhira Alharthy (first Omani to climb Everest) and US climber Mallory Geis.
  • Rescuers found four bodies; GPS data indicated the avalanche occurred at 6,579 meters between camps two and three on the west ridge.
  • Purja served 16 years in the British military, received an MBE, and twice risked his life to rescue fellow climbers.
