Tapo (Rust/Python library) now speaks TP-Link's TPAP protocol

  • Firmware update on Tapo plugs silently broke third-party access; a new 'Third-Party Compatibility' switch in the app controls whether devices accept older protocols.
  • The unofficial Tapo library v0.11.1 now supports the TPAP protocol (SPAKE2+), allowing devices to work with the switch off, with better security than the previous KLAP protocol.
  • New camera hubs H200 and H500 are supported, enabling listing paired cameras, retrieving recordings, and downloading clips as MPEG-TS files.
  • Plug schedules and timers are added: schedule rules can be time-based or sunrise/sunset-based, and timers allow single countdown actions.
  • The MCP server (tapo-mcp) now lists H200/H500 hubs and works with devices that have Third-Party Compatibility off, but lacks full schedule/timer support yet.
  • Breaking changes include removal of legacy AES protocol, renamed trigger logs/temperature fields, and changed Python enum comparability.
  • Future plans include more MCP server features, H110 hub support, fixed camera handler, device simulator, and possibly a Node.js wrapper.
