A new write and space optimized storage engine for MySQL is here

  • TidesDB is now available as an external plugin storage engine for MySQL v9 and v26, installed via install.sh script with plans for easier installation.
  • It is a write- and space-optimized LSM storage engine that runs as a plugin alongside InnoDB, not a fork.
  • Features include compression (LZ4 default, with Snappy, ZSTD, LZ4_FAST), value separation for large values, configurable LSM parameters, durability modes (FULL, INTERVAL, NONE), row expiration, per-row encryption, FULLTEXT indexes, foreign keys, spatial indexes, generated columns, JSON, vector columns, instant DDL, optimizer statistics, online backup, and MVCC concurrency.
  • Performance benchmarks on a Intel i9-13900 system show TidesDB significantly outperforming InnoDB: point select 2.6x, read write 2.0x, update index 5.4x, write only 4.6x, delete 6.0x, with much lower write amplification (e.g., 47x fewer bytes written per delete).
  • Large value handling: value separation yields 3x faster inserts and lower latency than keeping values inline, and compresses 3.05 GiB payload to 1.19 GiB (vs 4.24 GiB on InnoDB) with faster loading (8s vs 17s).
